Gommer, I don%26#39;t think there have safety issues on the LP to VTE road for several years now. You should be confident that it will be fine. Well, except for the twisty windy roads taken at speed that seems to rumble many peoples stomachs :-)

There are certainly a few ATMs in Vientiane - but I%26#39;m not sure I%26#39;d feel 100% confident elsewhere (I don%26#39;t recall seeing one in LP that worked).

Kip (also my name - makes for amusement in Laos); Thai Bhat and $US are also often accepted.

flight from Luang Prabang to Vientiane

We are hoping to fly from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Does anyone have information about the best way to do this and is Lao airlines the only airline to fly this route. Also, is it best to buy a ticket at a tour company or is there an airline agent in Luang Prabang. Thanks!

Bob, best I know, Lao Airlines is the only carrier to fly. They fly ATR 72 craft (ie. this one route has their best planes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATR_72)

I have bought tickets online at http://www.laoairlines.com/ with no problem (and they were very helpful transporting my bike too). On the other hand, I have heard of people not having much success with the web site.

I know there is a ticket office at Vientiane airport so I suspect there is one in LP as well (its a short taxi ride from town). Otherwise there are many many travel agents in town who can help you.

Thanks so much that%26#39;s great.

I have also recently booked a ticket for this routing with Lao airlines on line without any bother.

Charge was $76 including tax

I%26#39;ve used the Lao website and they are very good but you MUST use internet explorer. I don%26#39;t normally - use firefox and the site just doesn%26#39;t work.

We booked via e-mail they were a bit slow in replying but they did.

We went in July and had a great time but it was very wet and they were having problems as the rain never stopped.

I can only suggest try sending another e-mail...

  • Help needed tp plan: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam trip

Hi, Myself and partner are embarking on a year world trip starting in Nov. The plan is to head out in Nov and chill out on the islands for two months. I went to Thailand and done a bit of the north and island hopping for three weeks. Had a amazing time, so hence the big trip is being planned. I am wanting some help/advice on ';where to start'; when we head to Cam, Laos and Viet... i have alot of researching and reading to do.. however i thought here would be a good start... we will prob be around that are for a max of 6 weeks before heading down to Indonesia. So if any of you have any suggested routes or must do things or places to go.. then please drop me a line..

    Kind regards Em

Help needed tp plan: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam trip

Have you heard from anyone? What are your plans so far? I%26#39;d love to know because I would also like to plan a trip to all three countries (I take college students).

I have been to Vietnam twice (so a total of about 40 days) so can share info about that.

Help needed tp plan: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam trip

I would love to hear from you if you have any tips to give me re: Vietnam...

I always found that a good starting point was to ';pretend'; I was going to take a group tour---get hold of all the brochures from travel agents and see what they recommend. ( I didnt go on a group tour as they were very hurried but they gave you a good outline of where to go, that you could then modify to suit your own pace and budget)

Then read a good guide book ( eg. LP, rough guide) and then come back to here and read peoples questions ( and answers)

I did vietnam in Oct 2006 - went north to south over 3 weeks

Hanoi - to halong bay ( 3 days/ 2 nights - ocean tours) then flew to Hue ( 2 nights) drove to Hoi an ( ended up 5 days - loved the place) skipped nha trang ( I live on a beach so another beach resort wasnt a priority for me) flew from danang to HCMC - several days there - day trip to cu chi tunnels, coa dai temple - flew to dalat - 2 nights, 2 days

Missed mui ne, nha trang, sapa, mekong, central highlands, phu quoc island.

Planning trip no 2 ( off in 3 weeks)- will make sure I get to sapa, nha trang, mui ne and mekong delta as well as hanoi and HCMC , and am including laos , cambodia and a week in china in guilin to visit a friend.

    Your trip will be great

    Hi Noosa

    Hi,

My husband and I have just spent 10 weeks travelling through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. We didn%26#39;t travel much through Thailand this was really just our entry and exit points.

We flew into Bangkok then up to Chiang Mai and crossed the border into Loas in the north. We spent 2.5 weeks travelling down Loas. We included the Gibbon Experience, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Vientine, Paske and 4000 islands. We found we didn%26#39;t really have enough time and would have like to spend more time in 4000 islands.

We did an intrepid tour for 2.5 weeks in Cambodia which was great, but it would be very easy to do yourself. The tour we did was heart of Cambodia.

We spent a month in Vietnam beginning in the south and travelling to the north. We included a 9 day Easyrider tour www.dalat-easyrider.com.vn which would have been a highlight. We had local guides and the tour was designed to suit us. I would also recommend Sapa and Halong Bay. We also flew using Jetstar from Hoi An to Hanoi.

That%26#39;s going to be a very busy trip.

I would recommend flying from Hanoi to Laos.

We did a similar trip but took 10 weeks without including the islands in Thailand.

Just be aware travel overland takes a long time sometimes with an average speed of 40kph.

    Money and transport

Going to Laos in Nov. and would like to know about ATMs. Not many believe, a couple of years spent a month in the Yunnan Prov in China a and was told that there were no ATMs except in Kunming . this turned out to be not the case. Also with cash in Laos ,how readily are Aussie dollars accepted ?

Are buses the go to get around from city to city (town) ? Are there companies like Mekong Express there, I thought they were the standouts in Vietnam and Cambodia ? Thanks

    Money and transport

There are ATMs in all the tourist places, but we did find you need to go in the morning as they run out of money.

I think it%26#39;s better to travel with local currency.

There are buses/mini vans to get from place to place.

    Money and transport

Aussie dollars are readily accepted. There are plenty of ATMs in Vientiane, and some, though not as many, in other areas.

    flight from vientiane to hanoi

We are looking at flying from Vientiane to Hanoi in the next two weeks. Can anyone advise which airlines fly this route and what is the best way to book.

    Thanks for your help!

    flight from vientiane to hanoi

    Hi..

not sure from Vientaine but from Luang Prabang there are at least 2 companies, Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines, i guess will be the same from VT..

I%26#39;m actually in Vietnam and i have to fly from LP to Hanoi in 3 weeks and i have been suggested to wait to enter Laos before book a flight because is cheaper. Anyway Lao Airlines is cheaper than Vietnam Airlines..

    Cheers
