laos travel queries

hi all!

just have a couple of q%26#39;s re transport in Laos.

What is the most comfortable way to travel from:

Plain of Jars to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng to Vientiane

Costs, durations, descriptions and where to book would be fab! Thanks in advance!

Bunny, no answer in a few days to your question so I%26#39;ll punt (and hopefully others can give more specific info).

';Most comfortable'; means hire a car/driver. ';Most common'; means a Bus, or VIP Bus (the difference is cost, aircon and space). Buses can be booked pretty much at any accommodation of note or at a tourism agency like Green Discovery.

Vang Vieng to Vientiane is about 160kms, buses leave morning and evening and are about $US 14 (am not completely sure of that number).

I%26#39;ve not been to Plain of Jars but I think its quite a long and twisty ride (VV to VTE is level and straight all the way pretty much).

I did once get a car/driver from VV to VTE, I think it was around $US 60?

Cheers, --Kip

Hi - for VV to Vnte - if ';most comfortable'; is your main factor then after a private hire, its the VIP bus as above. They leave VV for Vnte 9am and 1pm cost $14.

Regular, less comfy/clean buses leave throughout the day till 4pm, cost $7.

VV to Vientiane usually 3 hours, but can be anywhere between 2.5 - 4hrs.

Plain of Jars (town Phonsavanh)is a pre-arranged private hire (through Vansana hotel on the hill is one way), or regular bus for about $7 - I don%26#39;t know of any VIP buses doing that route. Trip takes about 4 hours

From Vang Vieng we did a kayak tour which was fun, only problem was not enough kayaking and we still had to sit on a bus/tuk tuk for the rest of the trip, but it was something different.

The normal buses form VTE-VV are good enough- it%26#39;s only 3.5 hours, and the scenery is kinda nice.

I flew there %26amp; back from VTE-Phonsavan (Plain o%26#39; Jars). Time is money for me, and my butt doesn%26#39;t care for 10-hour bus rides from hell...

hi guys! thanks for all the advice! since Plain of Jars to Van Vieng transport doesn%26#39;t sound that great or have that many options, plus will take up more travel time.... BUT we want to fit in Vang Vieng and Plain of Jars..... would anyone think this was a good plan instead...?

fly luang prabang to plain of jars

fly plain of jars to vientiane

then do vientiane to vang vieng and then back to veintiane again by vip bus - this trip doesnt seem to be too long

also, there seems to be 2 x laos airlines websites: laosairlines.com and laos-airlines.com... are they both legitimate? is it best to book flights direct with these websites?

thanks!!

That plan sounds good, and you will be saving a great deal of time by flying. The VIP bus from Vientiane leaves at 4pm, while there are regular buses all day (from 7am). Take the regular bus- it is nice enough.

DO NOT book flights on Laos airlines, it is a bogus operation run out of France. The offical site of Lao Airlines is www.laoairlines.com
