I would appreciate any information about either hiring a car and driver or travelling by bus from Luang Prabang to Savannkhet. We will be a group of four and want to eventually head to Hue from Savannkhet. I%26#39;ve looked on the map of Laos and thought it looked like an Ok route, hoped we could get from Lunang Prabang to Savannkhet in one day. Would anyone have any information re this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi - you would need more time for sure, even to just travel without seeing anything.
Regular bus times from LP to Vientiane is about 9-10 hours, and from Vientiane to Savannakhet anywhere between 8 and 14 hours depending on how many stops the bus makes. The daily express bus Vientiane to Savannakhet is the best bet at 8 hours.
If you drive however you can go faster - the newish road Vientiane to savanakhet is good and 6-6.5 hours is possible.
I had no choice but to get a $6 local bus from savannakhet to vientiane last week and it was a 14 hour nightmare - 20 people packed into the aisle, stinking hot and about 10 inches leg room so would definitely recommend the $14 aircon express bus here!
Car and driver are about $80-$100 per day so for 4 of you would be very reasonable and comfy.
