Language problem

Hi

We have been to Thailand and Vietnam a few times and have had no problems with the language barrier, it is amazing what sign language and a smile can accomplish, but there are 2 phrases which we found helps a great deal.

Could anyone tell me how to say ';Thank You'; in Lao, and also '; Not Hot '; when ordering food. I can handle a little bit of spice but my wife has very little tolerance in that area.

If possible could you describe it as it sounds, as i notice that some of the English names [ ie Vientiane ] are not pronounced that way locally I can then try it out when i get there

Thanks for any help.

Gander.

';Kop chai'; is thank you and ';bo pet'; is not hot. Most people in the tourist areas know and speak English quite well, and are also familiar with western tastes so usually refrain from going heavy-handed on the chili peppers! Cheers!

When you arrive I suggest that you go to Monument Books and buy a little book called ';The Laos Phrasebook'; by Samson Brier. This will help a lot and make your stay more enjoyable. I can never understand people not wanting to learn a little bit of the language of the country they visit.

Thanks again guys

Gander

I used the Thai I memorized from a tape in 1997 and got around with no problem.... So, if you know any Thai, that will help some -

';Sa bai dee'; is ';hello';, instead of ';how are you'; though.

Lonely Planet sells a small SE Asia phrase book that I bought and schlepped around with me, but never used. You might find it useful.
