Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng - should we overnight halfway?

Hi, We%26#39;ll be travelling with our family in Laos in July and are wondering if we should stay in a guesthouse at a midway point to Vang Vieng? We have plenty of time....Would there be clean places to stay that would be suitable for young kids?

Thank you!

Oh, would you recommend taking local transport - we would like to....is it any more dangerous than taking the VIP buses? We would like to travel %26#39;local%26#39;.

Thanks again

Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng - should we overnight halfway?

Quick answer ';No';. There isn%26#39;t that much between I%26#39;d want to stay.

Local - VIP - not much difference; air conditioning is about it.

Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng - should we overnight halfway?

Thanks for that Rufuscat! As long as the local buses are the same safety wise that is the main thing..and thanks about the %26#39;not stopping%26#39; bit!

Thanks again!

If you like local transport, a good option for getting back from Vang Vieng to Vnte that I usually use are the shared Songthaews - basically trucks with benches in the back, leaving from the bus station.

The main advantage of these is that they run every 15 mins up till about 9pm, whereas the local buses usually end at 4pm, so you can have a full day in VV before leaving. They take 2.5 hours and cost 25000kip ($3). The %26#39;VIP%26#39; buses only leave twice a day, 8am and 1pm, wasting most of your day.

She%26#39;s travelling with young kids and a granny. I don%26#39;t think thats really a comfortable way for kids to travel.

Hi, was in Laos last month and we also tossed up whether to break the Luang Prabang - Vientiane journey. We spoke to around 10 people of different ages who had been to Vang Vieng and the general opinion was that it%26#39;s like a college campus (read party town) and great if you like tubing on the river. As we had wanted to go to see the ';amazing'; scenery, we opted to give it a miss and flew straight to Vientiane. Local transport (tuk tuk) prices can be negotiated and are a fun and safe way to get around the towns. There is not too much traffic anyway so I would recommend it.
