Can anyone recommend a really special restaurant in Laos, maybe in Vientiane or Luang Prabang??? Are there any restaurants that are real %26#39;must visits%26#39; and would make a good special occasion gift?

In Vientiane I would personally go to Le Central. Le Nadao is also excellent. La Opera has priced itself out of business as far as I am concerned, you are now paying near to Australian prices there and I think it is not as good as Le Central anyway. If you like Lao food I would go to Kua Lao.
In LP Maneki and I disagree; she likes L%26#39;Elefant, I swear by the Three nagas. It doesn%26#39;t matter, both are excellent.
The truth is, I am happy to eat in all these places and more besides.

Kua Lao would get my vote in Vientiane - the restaurant is in a restored old colonial building and has traditional musicians and dancing most nights, although not overly intrusive or disneyfied. The food is mostly contemporary Lao food - a good selection and mostly without padaek (fermented fish/rice husk) or very much chilli, to make it appeal to a wider palate. I had a meal for 2 there recently and it was about $30 including drinks.
I%26#39;ve been to Kua Lao twice and have had fabulous meals on both occasions. The atmosphere is excellent and they occasionally have dance and musical performances. Reservations are recommended.
