Travel from Luang Prabang to Plain of Jars

Anyone have a recommendation?? We will be in LP in October and want to visit P of J%26#39;s. I know we can fly via Vientiene but I need a tour after we get there or to take us overland. How are the roads from LP???

Thanks.

The road from LP to Phonsavan is quite alright. The bus journey takes about 8 hours. When you have reached Phonsavan, there are several travel agencies organising day tours to plains of jars which you can sign up.

Your hotel/guesthouse can arrange a driver %26amp; guide for you. Bring extra clothing- it gets cold up there!

Hi JaneB, we%26#39;ll be in LP in oct also... was wondering what you found out about getting to/from Plain of Jars from LP. I am only just starting my research.

We are flying into Saigon, so think we will fly to LP via Hanoi as i%26#39;ve found no direct flights...

thanks!

Since you will all probably be flying out of Vientiane, you might want to opt to fly to Xieng Khouang rorm there, There are several flights per week. That is the option I took, and spent 3 days there. I hired a car w/driver %26amp; guide for all of the 3 days. (Different drivers each day, as we didn%26#39;t pan anything)

plan anything

JJCookie. It looks like we will fly into Vientiane and from there to Xieng Khouang and spend one night. After we get to XK, we%26#39;ll make arrangements for a tour to the Plain of Jars. I guess we%26#39;ll return to Vientiane and from there fly on to LP. I have read that a flight goes from XK to LP one day a week but Lao Airlines does not show one. The road situation does not sound good so we probably will not plan on going overland, although I would like to!

Thank you, Meneki, for your helpful suggestions. Do you know about direct flights from XK to LP? Where did you stay?

Thanks,

Jane

Check out www.laoairlines.com for flight schedules. I stayed at the Maly Hotel but would not recommend it. Overpriced for what was on offer, and no heating at all (it got to 0 degrees there in December, very cold!), and no hot water. And their food was not mediocre. There are dozens of new places that have sprung up, in the $15-$20 range WITH hot water. Excellent restaurants in the town center. If you are going at the end of fall-winter, definitley bring warm clothing.

Their food WAS mediocre. Sorry!typo!
