i just came back from vang vieng. it was wonderful, i stayed in the very quiet place named thavonsouk bungalow resort. this is another corner of vang vieng that you can find peace. room is lovely not too expensive for such amazing view. we stayed in the garden view for only $18. the nicest ones are by the river $40 with breakfast but that was too much for us so here is their site:

We stayed at Elephant crossing fab hotel right on the river.The owners are really friendly we only stayed one night as we were off to L P but would recomend

Depends on what you are after. I have stayed at Vansana hotel which had lovely room/ balcony with fab views although more exp at about $60. For me worth every dollar. Ban Sabai is also very nice. Elephant Hotel OK too but you have dusty rocky unmade track down to it. Same track leads down to 2 other guesthouses which are OK but not as comfy. It all depends on price range. I hear walls at Thouvansok are paper thin.

If u are not going high season u can just ask to see aroom first. They are happy to show u and quote a price. Budget backpackers are plentiful. Ask to see room first
