Hi All,
I am searching for a safe and efficient way to get from Bangkok to Laos. We have limited time, so I do not think a bus or train would be efficient. I have been looking at airfare from BKK to the Luang Prabang Airport, and that is upwards of $400 per person!! Maybe I am not looking at the right websites. Can anyone advise?
Thanks in advance
best way to get to Laos from Thailand?
Hi,
400USD for one way BKK-LPG.... yes it is expensive.
Did you have a look on
www.thaiair.com
or
www.laoairlines.com
Another cheap alternative is to flight from/to BKK to/from Udon Thani (in Thailand) and then take a direct aiport bus to Nongkhai (border Thailand) and cross the bridge to Vientiane.
From Vientiane you can flight to LPG.
Or the other way arround.... cheaper than flying from/to BKK to/from VTE.
For this domesctic flight you can find at
www.thaiair.com
www.nokair.com
www.airasia.com
Have a good trip

You might consider purchasing the %26#39;Discovery Airpass%26#39; offered by Bangkok Airways. The number of seats avilable is limited, though.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! This is very helpful.
How long is the bus ride from Udon Thani to Vientiene?
Also, I checked out the discovery airpass website, but there is no link to purchase the airpass online. How can I go about finding out about timetables/price after taxes/purchasing?
I just booked my family tickets from BKK to L.P. a couple of weeks ago via a travel agency in Singapore. We paid about $1250 for 4 tickets (2 adults %26amp; 2 kids). I tried to book thru BKK Air, but the airfare was going to be around $600/rt in August and I paid $385/rt (S$506)thru the agent plus reduced airfares for my kids. I knew the agent thru a good friend in S%26#39;pore, who is also going to L.P. the same time. Thai Airways doesn%26#39;t go there. They will book your ticket through Bangkok Air. I reccommend that you check around first before purchase. You should get roundtrip for $400; not one-way.
You can check out these websites:

Good luck!
The bus trip from Udon to the border is only an hour. The buses leave regularly and only cost a few dollars. As for the discovery airpass, you can only book through a travel agent outside of Thailand. Most dont know about it so you will have to fill them in. You cant fly to Udon though using it, and dont forget you need to use 3 flights to qualify.
when you are exiting Udon thani airport , there is a minibus counter 150bt to lao border, get another minibus on the lao side to vientiane about 300bt
easiest way is to just fly from BKK Bangkok air flys to LP or lao air and thai air both fly to Vientiane, but yes it was 359R/T, or fly to Udon Thani on asia air or nokair, less than $50 1 way and make your way up to VTE by minibus or bus, or take the overnight train BKK to Nong Khai about $60 for 2 on a 1st class sleeper compartment, if you stay in VTE you can buy tickets to LP there and save a little money $135 r/t on lao air, or the only other option is to take a 10 hour bus ride, be flexible with your schedule and you can save some money, callao

Sorry, I found your reply now.
You need to contact the Bangkok Airways office in your country to buy the pass. The call numbers are listed in the travel fish link.
The taxes and charges need to be quoted via phone, not online.
