Using USD traveller cheques - are charges high?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how much we will be charged for cashing $USD traveller cheques in Luang Prabang? Do they take a percentage? Does this charge exist for cashing US dollars cash?

We are a bit nervous about carrying large sums of cash on our bodies....but Laos is quite safe re muggings etc isn%26#39;t it?

If you have any advice we would be very grateful!

Depends where you cash them, but usually you apy a surcharge. Traveller%26#39;s cheques are old technology. I haven%26#39;t used them in more than 10 years. They are designed by banks to rip people off.

Use cash and plastic. Maybe $100.00 in TC for absolute emergencies.

Thank you for the advice....does that mean, that if we have USD cash that it is safe for us to wear in concealed money belts on our bodies or are we better off leaving larger amounts in our hotel?

I usually like to have travelors checks with me but have never had any problems in Laos.I would not however leave cash in your room anywhere take TCs or keep your money on you as it is too much of a temptation for a poor cleaning person to grab the cash if TCs you get them back,keep a $100 dollars in kip with you it will go along way and TCs you can cash them in vientiane on the weekend acrooss the street from Lane Xang hotel in LP it is a little less easy to cash TCs, especially on the weekend when I was there every bank closed at 400pm and were closed on the weekend so remember that, get enough money for the weekend if using TCs, no mugging etc and I would be out late etc and never had a problem with anybody, callao
