Have got nervous : what would happen in an emergency ?

We are very keen to visit Luang Prabang. However I have read that the healthcare is virtually non existent and that you are best making your way to Thailand. However what happens if there is a medical emergency and you cannot get there on plane e.g. badly injured in a car crash. We have good insurance with medical evacuation coverage but I am not sure how this would actually practically work in absence of a local hospital/doctors for you to be taken to in first instance. Does anyone therefore know how this issue of medical evacuation is handled in practice in Luang Prabang ? I know this is a really nervous sort of question and I have travelled all over the world without the thought even occurring to me before but having got the concern into my head it would be helfpul for me know the answer !

Hi Jadeb, if you have an accident just about anywhere in the world a couple of hours outside a major city, the level of care and response drops by the mile.

Keep your travel insurance with medivac and don’t ride motor bikes. In fact the Lao government has banned you from doing just that so you won’t take up a bed in their brand new provincial hospital.

See they care.

If you’re still worried internationalsos will medivac you from just about anywhere on their private fleet with their own medical staff but it’s not cheap to join.

Just enjoy your trip to Lao,

I hope it will not happen.... but if you have a medic evac insurance, it should not be a problem. You have several flight / day to Thailand, either directly to BKK, or Chang Mai. You have also a direct flight to Hanoi and in the worse case, many flight to Vientiane/days.

So, really in case of emergency, you can be evacuated from Luang Prabang very quickly to an good standard hospital.

However, a car crash in LPG.... is very rare, the trafic is very slow and only few cars.
