VIP bus from Vientiane to Udon Thani

Hi

Has anyone used this service ?

I am more concerned about the ability to cater for 2 adults who will both have 1 large and 1 small suitcase each. Will the luggage compartment be able to handle this.

Any other information about this service would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Gander.

Maybe; if you get there early enough and push and shove your way to the front of the queue when the mad scramble starts. Otherwise you will have to put it on the bus itself and that is painful.

Hi Rufuscat

Thanks for the info. As we are in our early 70s and although still quite active it seems like a battle that we would probably not win.

Is there any other way to do this trip. We would not mind forking out the extra cash for a hired car with driver, but are there any that can cross the border ?

We ourselves would not need a visa to enter Thailand but i am not sure about Lao drivers.

As it is not all that long a distance, and when you consider the check in check out proceedures it would seem rather silly to look at air travel.

Any idea as to how we can accomplish trip painlessly ?

Thanks again

Gander.

Easiest is to take a taxi I think given your circumstances ; wife and I have done this and it is painless albeit more exensive - but as you say..... If you ask one of the taxis at Nam Phou fountain they should be bale to help. I think there is also a mini bus you can take but I am not 100% about this. I will ask around and let you know. When are you going?

Hi Rufuscat

Not going until November, but the whole trip depends upon this leg. I will not book flights etc until i can arrange something.

A taxi would be fine if they can go across the border.

I have read that it is possible to get a taxi to the friendship bridge and another on the Thai side, but apparently we would have to take the shuttle bus to cross the bridge. This would probably give us the same hassles as the VIP bus.

Thanks again for your help.

Gander.

you can usually get a minibus to the border for 250bt but if you are going to have to negotiate with the minibus driver on the thai side , where although its only 150 bt from the airport to the border I;ve been charged as much as $25 for the trip to the airport, as you might be the only ones going there, callao

Thanks Callao

We will be going to a hotel in Udon Thani. Would this make a difference?

Gander.

same thing applys you might have to negotiate a price as you probably the only ones going there,150bt times 5people in a minvan equals750bt so I would expect to pay that maybe more, callao

Gander, I asked a few taxi drivers yesterday. They will take you to Udon, but it will cost a bit.

Seriously your best option is the following - take a taxi to the Friendship Bridge and do your visa formalities. Get a Thai taxi driver there - not too hard - they will take you through the Thai border and on to Udon. Wife and I have done this and it is easy to do.

Thanks for your efforts Rufuscat. Yes i think that will be the way to go.

Can we in fact walk across the bridge?. I have heard that this is not possible and that we must take a shuttle bus. What was your experiences in this area.

No, that you can%26#39;t do.
