Up River from Luang Prabang

Flying in to LP from Hanoi on 29th. May to spend 12 days in Laos; with our Lonely Planet and so much great advice and information gleaned from this and the Vientiane Forums.(without asking a lot of questions that have already been dealt with!)

Thanks to the regular contributors such as Rufuscat, who%26#39;s no-nonsense advice has been appreciated. (and yes Rufuscat, we will be spending at least 2 days in your city and dare not ignore your accomodation and restaurent selections!)

My only questions relate to whether water levels on the Nam Ou will be sufficient for boating up river from L.P. to Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi Neua and possibly as far up as Muang Khua. Secondly, would the last leg to Muang Khua be worth while. i.e. Would this add much to the experience of Mountains, scenery or village life?

As usual, we propose to organise ourselves along the way but propose to travel up river by road where ever possible. Mel

Can%26#39;t answer Mel, as I don%26#39;t know. Have a great trip. Try a meal at La Central. Its a french place that has opened up. Excellent food and service. BYO wine at $3.00 corkage, and there are some pretty decent wine shops in Vte.

Hello Mel, I did a trip downriver but started in Muang Khua ( had come down by road from further north). Yes it is beautiful the stretch from here to Muang Ngoi. Although it poured rain for the first 15 mins (ouch).

I would say it depends on your time limits. Imo to allow 5 days (minimum 4) for a trip from LP to Muang Ngoi. One thought is that you be backtracking from Muang Ngoi to Nong Kiaw so why not go further then drive back to LP.
