By road from Pakse to Vientiane - private car with driver

No experience here, but I would say that would be VERY expensive and not terribly comfortable. There are night buses To Pakse from Vientiane- very comfy- you can actually lie down in their little beds- for about $16 one-way. I usually fly distances like Vientiane-Luang Prabang.

Yes I have rented a car with driver from Vientiane. It was very comfortable way to travel and we could stop as we pleased. word of warning though you unless u speak Laotian or Thai u will need to insist on English speaking driver if u wish to communicate with driver. We were assured of english speaking driver and went out to find not a word of English. We said no and they did eventually send someone with good english. Depends if u want to stop at places on the way too.

It is also much more expensive than in other countries. It%26#39;s about $200USD to Luang Prabang. We stopped over in Van Vieng which is not much of a town but the countryside and other experiences are awesome. Worthwhile.

You can also hire minivans and try to organise a group to make it cheaper.

VIP buses are cheapest way to travel. Can%26#39;t comment on comfort level of buses as we%26#39;ve used cars and vans. The minivan driver from Van Vieng was lovely. Not much English but still able to communicate with my Thai. Less exi than booking from Vientiane or over the net was to book on arrival and negotiate deal yourself. cut out the agencies!

I just booked tickets for the VIP (sleeper bus) for 180,000 kip ($18 per person) from Vientiane to Pakse. Did this trip in February (was 2000 kip cheaper then!) and it takes 10 hours.

Private vehicle rental is a lot more expensive than the VIP buses that run between these two destinations. However it is a lot more relaxing to travel on your own.

Asia Vehicle Rental (avr@loxinfo.co.th) offer vehicle rental with English speaking drivers,

Cheers
