Hey i recently heard about Vang Vieng and that it is well worth a visit? where is it? near LuanPrabang and/or Ventiene? how get thre? places (budget) to stay etc? would love to hear from you! K
Vang Vieng?
Vang Vieng is about half way between Vte and LP. It has beautiful karst landscapes, but it attracts the lowest common denominator of backpacker, who enjoys boozing and getting stoned and watching re runs of friends. My Lao friends loath the place.
If you can put up with or avoid this the karst landscapes are definitely worth seeing.
Vang Vieng?
Places to stay?
Vang Vieng is 3.5 hr drive fron Vientiane on the way to Luang Prabang, destination point for backpackers from all over the world so lots of college age kids around, the tubings fun, a couple of caves, beautiful little valley, cheap accommadation, but the whole town is setup to cater to the backpackers so theres really cheap places to stay, weird TV bars cheap beer and lao lao etc etc, I%26#39;d say its overrated for the over 40 crowd, callao
The caves are amazing, and hardly anyone is in them, as all the party animals opt for tubing (bloody boring if you ask me). The landscape is just amazing. Rent a mountainbike and go see the caves. Don%26#39;t forget to bring proper flashlights!
Karen, VV really seems to polarise people. I am most definitely in the ';over 40'; category. Arrived into VV after riding my bicycle from LP and it was a perfect antidote to mountain riding.
Yes, all of the crazy bars, backpackers and the like are there. But if you don%26#39;t got to those bars then its no issue.
Hire a motorbike for about $10 a day and ride around the karsts, villages, the river and just enjoy the people and scenery.
I like the Elephant Crossing. Right on the river, run by an Australian woman and her Lao husband. Very hospitable and very helpful people.
Cheers, --Kip
Thanks for the info!! i will visit VV and being 38 willdo my own thing incl hire mountain bike,...sounds super! any suggestions for budget hotels in LP and Vientiane? i am getting so excited now as this time next week i will be IN bangkok...yahoo....
Look at that little bar on the left of your screen that says ';Laos Deals'; and click there for hotel information.
I have been to Vang Vieng a couple of times and had a good time and will probably go again but I think I;d stay in one of the riverside bungalos and chill and enjoy nature there it is a nice location, I%26#39;d like to try one of the green discovery kayaking trips, those look fun as well, but not much to do after dark besides drinking in a TV bar with the backpackers, never thought I%26#39;d see people travel all the way to laos to sleep in a tent vang vieng, but to each thier own, callao
